The Karnataka Theological College (KTC), Mangalore is one of the oldest Theological Institutions in India, established in 1847. Today it is the nucleus constituent of the Karnataka Christian Educational Society (KACES) which was founded in 1969 as a registered society under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act
As a Theological College, we believe that the firm foundation of our words and deeds is our faith in Triune God who is revealed in the acts of creation and history, liberation and redemption, renewal and sanctification.
We beleive that:
God is the ultimate Vindicator of the oppressed, the weak and the poor, who judges the evil forces in history
Jesus the Christ proclaims God’s reign, the coming of the favour of the Lord, which will be subversive to the evil powers and through the cross and the resurrection brings the heaven for the dispossessed, the rejected and the downtrodden
The Holy Spirit moves vigorously among all peoples, equipping and leading the whole creation into all Truth
The Church is an inclusive community, united and ecumenical and as God’s instrument in the world strives for peace, justice and the integrity of creation through fellowship, worship and acts of liberation
We also believe in and look forward to the creation of a new history and a new cosmos which is wrought not by human might or power, but by the Spirit of God
The College affirms that theological education is a process of interaction between theory and praxis. It is a process of equipping the student to analyze and meet present day problems in the light of the Christian tradition. It is also a process of reflection upon issues from the point of different disciplines. Therefore in the curriculum the College attempts to combine exposure to real life situations and theoretical reflection, knowledge and skills, and an inter-disciplinary approach for study and active involvement. The College lays emphasis on three aspects: (i) academic excellence, (ii) practical skills, and (iii) personal formation.
Academic excellence relates both to a comprehensive theological knowledge and to an in-depth understanding of the context. With the development of literacy, urbanization even of rural areas and the revolutionary growth of science and technology, it is necessary to maintain certain academic standard for pastors
Practical skills related to the ministry in the Church are of equal importance. Pastoral and other ministerial needs of the people are becoming both diversified and specialized. Hence, students have to be trained in skills according to their talents and aptitudes in order to develop specialized ministries in the Church in urban as well as rural set up
Personal formation of a theological student is fundamental to Christian ministry. A basic commitment to Christ accompanied by academic excellence and practical skills will make a person a faithful steward of the Gospel. Therefore, the attention is given to the student’s spiritual growth into maturity, both in its personal and communitarian dimensions. Theological education is undertaken in the context of present day India.
