Press Day 2026 – In Memory of Rev. Dr. Hermann Mögling

Karnataka Journalists Union, Dakshina Kannada in collaboration with the Karnataka Theological College observed Press Day in remembrance of the first Kannada newspaper MangaluruSamachara by Rev Dr Hermann Mögling at the Karnataka Theological College, Balmatta Mangalore. Dr Mögling, the founding principal of the Karnataka Theological College is called the father of journalism in South India. In Karnataka, Press Day is observed on July 1st, in memory of Rev Dr Hermann Mögling who published the first Kannada daily 'MangaluruSamachaara,' on 1st July 1843. The contribution of Mangaluru Samachara, the first Kannada newspaper, and its editor Dr. Hermann Mögling to Kannada journalism is historic and invaluable said the Chief Guest M. A. Gaffoor, Chairman of the Coastal Development Board. He was speaking after paying floral tributes to the statue of Dr. Hermann Mogling. Speaking on the occasion, Tulu Sahitya Academy President Taranath Gatti Kapikad said Dr. Mögling made remarkable contributions not only to journalism but also to Kannada Literature by editing and publishing works such as Jaimini Bharata, Basava Purana and collections of Dasa Sahitya. The programme was attended by Karnataka Theological College Principal Dr. H. M. Watson, Mangalore Press Club president Harish Rai P. B. and Karnataka Journalists' Union Honorary president Harish Bantwal. Among those present were Mangalore Working Journalists' Association President Pushparaj B.N., Karnataka Journalists' Union District General Secretary Jyothiprakash Punacha, Treasurer Canute Pinto, Mangaluru Press Club Vice President Bhaskar Rai Katta, Journalist Donald Pereira, Edward Lobo, Hamid Vittla as well as Faculty members, research scholars, staff and students of the Karnataka Theological College. The Program began with a welcome by Karnataka Journalists' Union District President Eshwar Varanashi, who also proposed the vote of thanks.
